That same flexibility drives professionals\u2019 decisions today as they navigate the current terrain. That\u2019s why&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/go.ncsu.edu\/fai-summit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Food Animal Innovation Summit<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;organizers got creative when designing this year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result? Three unique conferences happening at the same time, with a multi-species feel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The guarantee? Something for everyone\u2014whether you work in industry or as a veterinarian or if you study swine or select poultry feed. You will benefit. Plus, it\u2019s an awesome opportunity for in-person networking. Here\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/fai-animal-health-nutrition-and-precision-animal-systems-conference-tickets-165781752685\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how to register<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tell Me More&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Occurring September 21-23 at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stateviewhotel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">StateView Hotel<\/a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NC&#160;State\u2019<\/a>s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/centennial.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centennial Campus<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitraleigh.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raleigh<\/a>, NC, the 2021 Symposium is in-person, with hybrid options, and hosted by NC&#160;State\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College of Agriculture and Life Sciences<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/foodanimal.ncsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food Animal Initiative<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/foodanimal.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/10\/NCStateCALS.Cow_-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"Food Animal Initiative: Cow at NC&#160;State\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For our audience of farm-service professionals, the focus starts on the feed industry, moves to the gut of the animals, considers how we collect data and reviews making decisions on the farm.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agenda covers everything from feeds and nutrition to gut health to new technologies in animal production, so there\u2019s a logical flow to the meeting organization, with the intent to encourage crossover. Speakers include industry experts and NC&#160;State researchers, focusing on food animal innovation projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the line-up:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.carolinafeed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Carolina Feed Industry Association<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;(CFIA) Fall Conference.&nbsp;<\/strong>CFIA will host an industry-focused meeting, with a slant toward technical professionals, and will look at pre-harvest and in-the-field technology as well as feed mill quality.&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/ncsu.edu\/afnc\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Animal Health and Nutrition Consortium<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;(AHNC) Symposium.&nbsp;<\/strong>AHNC will host a scientific meeting for academics and technical specialists in the industry and focus on gut health and precision management of animals.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/ncsu.edu\/precisionanimalsystems\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Precision Animal Systems<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;(PAS) Symposium<\/strong>. With the PAS Symposium, the audience shifts to the producer, with a focus on technology and how you can use the collected data.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a food industry professional in the CFIA meeting will most likely be interested in the AHN\u2019s discussion of gut health as well as intrigued by gut health technology presentations in the PAS section. Or look at it this way, a nutritionist could learn about swine, poultry and dairy, from the full cycle of feed to technology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like we said, something for everyone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who\u2019s Hosting?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/prestage-department-of-poultry-science\/people\/pferket\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Peter Ferket<\/a>&nbsp;will head up the CFIA portion of this year\u2019s event. Ferket is a William Neal Reynolds Professor of Nutrition and Biotechnology in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/prestage-department-of-poultry-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prestage Dept. of Poultry Science<\/a>&nbsp;and Director of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/ncsu.edu\/afnc\/home?authuser=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Animal Health &amp; Nutrition Consortium<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the CFIA and AHNC team will be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/animal-science\/people\/jpholt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Jonathan Holt<\/a>, who works in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/animal-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Animal Science<\/a>&nbsp;as an Extension Swine Specialist and Assistant Professor.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/animal-science\/people\/shward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Stephanie Ward<\/a>&nbsp;will lead the PAS Symposium; also in Animal Science, Ward is an Assistant Professor and Extension Dairy Specialist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Makes This Event Unique?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Poultry, Dairy, Swine\u2026Oh My&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This symposium is multi-species, including poultry, dairy and swine. The ideas to be discussed impact all of these species, but that doesn\u2019t mean the various farm service providers frequently talk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn their 2019 Symposium reviews, attendees said they really enjoyed hearing about multiple groups. There\u2019s a large biannual dairy precision conference, as well as one for swine and poultry, but not one that brings it all together,\u201d says Ward. This symposium delivers on that request.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Show Us, Don\u2019t Tell Us<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/foodanimal.ncsu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/10\/NCState.LakeWheelerFarm-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"NC&#160;State Lake Wheeler Farm\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/prestage-department-of-poultry-science\/news\/big-data-big-ideas-fai-symposium-addresses-future-of-animal-agriculture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2019 FAI Symposium<\/a>&nbsp;was to show off all the technologies across the different species. This year, we want to show attendees the technology in action. Ward says, \u201cWe will examine how a farmer could take science and convert it into usable data to make sound decisions on the farm.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data is worthless if you cannot analyze it, so we\u2019ll be highlighting companies who weave the data together and focusing on data advancement, collection and analysis software. In fact, Ward anticipates a Data Management Workshop, where attendees can work with data scientists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Did Someone Say Field Trip?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another new aspect is a Field Day at the Swine Nutrition Barn at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cals.ncsu.edu\/research\/research-facilities\/off-campus-research-facilities\/lake-wheeler-road-facility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lake Wheeler Road<\/a>. Past attendees were eager to see \u201cmore application of the technology, with good examples of utilization on the farm.\u201d This year offers that opportunity.
